Belgaum, also known as Belagavi or Belgavi, is a city located in the northwestern part of the state of Karnataka, in the southern region of India. Situated near the borders of Maharashtra and Goa, this vibrant city has a rich historical significance and a stunning natural landscape. Once known as BellaGavi, meaning "Jaggery Village" in Kannada language, Belgaum was famous for its production of sugar cane and jaggery. Over time, it evolved into Belagavi and eventually Belgaum. The city got its name from Venugrama, which translates to "Bamboo Village." Belgaum is a place of contrasts, embodying both ancient charm and modern development. The old town area showcases the traditional craftsmanship of cotton and silk weavers, who continue to create magic with their skilled hands. On the other hand, the modern and bustling Cantonment, built by the British, is lined with trees, creating a picturesque setting. The district of Belgaum has deep historical roots, with Halsi being the most ancient place in the district. It was once the capital of a dynasty of nine Kadamba kings. In 1776, Belgaum was captured by Hyder Ali of Mysore but was later retaken by the Peshwa with British assistance. In 1818, it became part of the British East India Company's Bombay presidency and was designated as a district of Sangli state. Kittur, located in the Belgaum district, holds significant historical importance. Queen Chennamma of Kittur is renowned for her resistance against British rule. Another notable figure in Belgaum's history is Sangolli Rayanna, who also fought against British oppression. With its proximity to Maharashtra, Goa, Bangalore, and Mumbai, Belgaum enjoys a strategic location. It stands at the foothills of the Sahyadri range, part of the Western Ghats, at an altitude of 2,500 feet (779 m) above sea level. The weather in Belgaum is pleasant, characterized by mild summers and cool winters. The region experiences heavy rainfall during the southwestern monsoon season, receiving around 50 inches of rain annually. Belgaum serves as the divisional headquarters for seven northern districts of Karnataka, showcasing its significance as a regional hub.
