Belgaum, originally known as Bellagavi, has a fascinating history full of intriguing names and stories. In the past, the region was famous for its production of sugar cane and jaggery. The town's name originated from "Venugrama," which means Bamboo Village. It is the district headquarters and has a significant ancient site called Halsi, which was once the capital of a dynasty of nine Kadamba kings.
Throughout history, Belgaum has witnessed moments of resistance against British rule. Queen Chennamma of Kittur and Sangolli Rayanna are renowned figures who fought against the British in the region. The city has different names -Marathi people call it Belgav, Kannada people call it Belgavi, and South Karnataka people refer to it as Belagam.
