The reclamation of the Beemster lake in the 16th century was a monumental undertaking. It required the use of 50 windmills and took five years to complete. The mastermind behind this incredible feat was none other than Jan Adriaensz Leeghwater, an engineer who gained eternal fame for his work. The investors, primarily wealthy merchants from Amsterdam, were rewarded with the reclaimed land, which was carefully divided into a grid of rectangular blocks. The Beemster became renowned for its remarkable fertility, leading to the initiation of numerous other reclamation projects in the 17th century. However, not all projects were as successful. Today, the Beemster remains a thriving agricultural area, although the traditional windmills have been replaced by efficient pumping stations. The municipality is home to approximately 9,000 residents, mainly residing in the picturesque villages of Middenbeemster, Noordbeemster, Westbeemster, and Zuidoostbeemster.
