Bangkok, originally a small village, once had a completely different course of the Chao Phraya River. The river's horseshoe shape slowed down trade ships, but a canal was eventually dug to shorten sailing time. The village became a tax collection port and customs office for foreign traders. King Taksin, a capable military leader, conquered back Siam and made Thonburi the new capital. However, foreigners continued to refer to the city as "Bangkok." Thonburi remained undeveloped compared to its neighbor until it was physically linked in 1932. Thonburi officially became part of the city of Krung Thep (Bangkok) in 1971.
