Understand
Founded in 1763 and incorporated into the city in 1773, Fells Point is a captivating historic district that holds the distinction of being Maryland's first designated historic district. During the early nineteenth century, the harbor played a pivotal role as a major immigration destination and a hub for the U.S. shipbuilding industry. Notably, Fells Point witnessed the birth of the Virginia, the first frigate of the Continental Navy, and the renowned Baltimore Clipper - fast ships that achieved significant success during the War of 1812. The British Navy targeted Baltimore to halt the production of these formidable ships, demonstrating their impact on the outcome of the war.
Unlike the rest of the city, Fells Point managed to retain its beauty and charm throughout the twentieth century. Preservationists passionately safeguarded the historic buildings, and with the support of wealthy locals and thriving businesses, the district flourished into an important tourist attraction. Little Italy, a tightly knit Italian immigrant community, exists within Fells Point and entices visitors with its authentic and delectable cuisine. Other neighborhoods, such as Jonestown with its vibrant Jewish history and Upper Fells Point with its burgeoning Latino community, add to the cultural richness of the area. Butcher's Hill, though lacking significant attractions, showcases its rich German-American and Jewish heritage
