Understand
In Hindu mythology, there is a fascinating story about Sati, the wife of Lord Shiva. She sacrificed herself during a fire worship ritual called yagna, which was being performed by her father Dakshmaharaj. This act angered Lord Shiva, and he started the tandava nritya, a powerful dance of destruction. To prevent the destruction of all creation, Lord Vishnu intervened by using his Sudershan charka, a cosmic wheel. He cut Sati's body into several parts, scattering them all over the Indian subcontinent. These scattered body parts became sacred sites known as Shakti Pithas or holy spots. Presently, there are 51 such Pithas, some of which are located in West Bengal, including the popular ones like Kalighat, Bakreshwar, and Tarapith. Bakreshwar is believed to be the Pitha where Sati's forehead and eyebrows fell. The main temple in Bakreshwar is dedicated to Lord Shiva, also known as Bakranath. This temple follows the architectural style of the rekha-deul found in Odisha. It is surrounded by numerous smaller Shiva temples, some of which are without any idols. The legend also tells the story of Astabkra, a disfigured sage who searched for a sacred spot named Gupta Kasi. After ten thousand years of worshiping Lord Shiva, a temple was erected in Bakreshwar in his honor. The temple contains two graven images, with the larger one representing Astabakra. Although the present temple is not ancient, as per a tablet, a portion of it was erected in 1761 A.D. The temple town of Bakreshwar is famous for its eight hot springs, one of which reaches temperatures near 200 degrees Fahrenheit. These hot springs are believed to have healing powers, and a large bathing pond is available for visitors. The town of Bakreshwar offers a captivating blend of mythology, history, and natural wonders.
