Understand
Howland Island, situated near the island we are discussing, was unsuccessful in its attempt at colonization due to the disruption caused by World War II. However, our island, which the US took possession of in 1857, has an interesting history. During the second half of the 19th century, US and British companies mined its guano deposits. Although abandoned after the war, it is now a National Wildlife Refuge run by the US Department of the Interior. Don't forget to visit the day beacon located near the middle of the west coast for a unique sight!
