Understand
The Chagang region derives its name from Mount Baekdu, the highest point in the Baekdu mountain range. This mountainous area is home to several peaks exceeding 2000 meters, with Baekdu Mountain being a highly sought-after tourist destination in North Korea and considered a mythic origin by many Koreans. The region shares a long border with China, formed by the Yalu and Tumen Rivers. While Chagang is rich in mineral resources, Ryangang to the west is one of the poorest provinces in the country, forming part of North Korea's own Rust belt along with its southern neighbors.
