Badolato, a charming hilltop village founded in 1080, offers a picturesque view, resembling a fortress. Situated between two valleys and surrounded by cliffs, this Calabrian city showcases a unique architectural structure. In ancient times, many coastal cities adopted this design, with the marina located by the shore and the main town positioned further inland. This layout provided safety from enemy raids, pushing people to settle in the higher and more distant lands. Additionally, residing inland has its advantages, such as escaping scorching summer heat and strong coastal winds. Badolato has a fascinating history, marked by devastating earthquakes and a catastrophic flood in 1951. This natural disaster caused the town to be abandoned and transformed into a ghost village. However, through the efforts of social programs and the attention of the Italian cultural world, Badolato was able to rebuild and return to normal life.
