Apia, the capital of Samoa, was founded in the 1850s and has held its official status since 1959. This vibrant city has a rich history, marked by dramatic events. In 1889, a showdown unfolded in its harbor, involving seven ships from Germany, the US, and Britain. These vessels defied a typhoon and braved the storm to save face. Unfortunately, all ships, except for one British cruiser, were sunk, causing the loss of nearly 200 lives. Another dark chapter in Apia's history took place in the early 1900s, during Samoa's struggle for independence. A peaceful gathering resulted in the tragic death of the paramount chief Tupua Tamasese Lealofi III and ten others at the hands of New Zealand police. Despite its slightly worn appearance, Apia serves as a convenient starting point for first-time visitors. It offers the perfect opportunity to orient oneself, plan explorations of Upolu Island, arrange accommodations by the beach, and recover from jet lag. While most of Samoa's highlights lie outside of the city, they can be easily reached within a short drive.
