Welcome to Anina, a breathtaking city tucked away in the enchanting forested mountains that bear the same name. These majestic mountains represent an extension of the southern range of the Western Carpathians, creating a captivating backdrop for this hidden gem. Anina derives its name from the Romanian word for alder, "anin," which perfectly reflects the natural beauty that surrounds the city. The story of Anina begins with the arrival of Austrian settlers who established the colony of Steierdorf. In 1774, more settlers from Austria arrived, followed by a Slovak colony, and the population grew to 300 inhabitants. These first inhabitants laid the foundation for the city we see today. However, history took a dark turn during World War II. In January 1945, the local German population was forcibly deported to labor camps in the Soviet Union, leaving behind a poignant legacy. Anina is predominantly known as a mining town, thriving around the coal mines that dot the landscape. Sadly, after the year 1989, the town experienced a significant economic downturn, causing hardship for its residents. Nonetheless, Anina holds a rich history and unique charm. In 1952, it was designated as a city area, gaining the name Anina. Today, as the decline of the mining industry began in 1996, the city continues to persevere, despite the challenges brought on by the closure of the mines. Anina is a testament to the resilience and determination of its people, and its beauty remains an enduring attraction.
