Let's delve into the fascinating story behind the Northwest Angle, a distinctive geographic feature resulting from a historical misunderstanding. The Treaty of Paris (1783), marking the end of the American Revolutionary War, outlined the boundary between the United States and Great Britain. According to the treaty, the boundary would run "through the Lake of the Woods to the most northwestern most point thereof, and from thence on a due west course to the river Mississippi." However, the parties involved were unaware that the source of the Mississippi, Lake Itasca, lay south of that indicated point. This lack of geographical knowledge led to the creation of the Northwest Angle.
Fortunately, the error was rectified in the Anglo-American Convention of 1818. The revised agreement established that the boundary would run due south from the northwest point of the lake to the 49th parallel, and then proceed westward along it. Yet, when the north-south line was surveyed, it intersected various bays of the lake, resulting in the segmentation of U.S. territory. This territory, now known as the Northwest Angle, stands as one of only four non-island locations within the contiguous United States that are not directly connected to the rest of the country by land. The others are Elm Point, Minnesota; Point Roberts, Washington; and the town of Alburgh, Vermont. Notably, the settlement in the Northwest Angle is the northernmost in the contiguous United States, adding to its unique charm.
