Ahmedabad, founded by King Karandev 1 in the 11th century and originally known as "Karnavati," has a rich history that dates back over 400 years. Sultan Ahmed Shah renamed the city to Ahmedabad after conquering Gujarat in 1411. Situated in spacious plains to the East of Sabarmati, Ahmedabad was designed around the magnificent Bhadra Fort. The city expanded over time, with new areas developed on the banks of the river, resulting in a cityscape adorned with beautiful buildings, lakes, and mosques. It wasn't until 1818, when the British cunningly annexed Ahmedabad, that substantial changes occurred. Interestingly, unlike other large cities influenced by British colonization, Ahmedabad didn't see extensive cultural integration as the British limited themselves to the cantonment area. However, language isn't a barrier in this city, which has emerged as an international trading hub. Most locals speak English, in addition to Gujarati and Hindi, making communication easy for visitors. Ahmedabad played a significant role in India's non-violent movement for independence and is home to the historic Sabarmati Ashram, where Mahatma Gandhi resided. This city beautifully blends its rich traditions with a modern vibe. Every year, Ahmedabad comes alive during the Navaratri festival, known as the longest dance festival on earth. Renowned for its textile industry in the past, Ahmedabad has evolved into a major industrial city, excelling in sectors such as chemicals, petroleum, international trade, and IT. The city also stands out for its splendid Islamic architecture, including landmarks like the shaking towers, Sidi Saiyed Jali, Sarkhej Roza, and the Jama Masjid. Ahmedabad isn't just an industrial and cultural hub; it's also recognized for its educational institutions. Some prestigious universities and colleges, such as the Indian Institute of Management - Ahmedabad, Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar, National Institute of Design, and Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University, have put Ahmedabad on the world map as a center of excellence in education.
