Abruzzo, formerly known as Aprutium, is a region in Italy that was divided into two parts: Further Abruzzo and Hither Abruzzo. In 1860, with the Unity of Italy, the region of Molise was added to Abruzzo. A modern expressway system has opened Abruzzo to tourism, making it easily accessible from Rome and Naples. The region offers diverse landscapes, including sandy beaches along the Adriatic coast and hills that quickly transform into majestic mountains. The mountaineous region of l'Aquila, closest to Rome, is filled with castles, ancient ruins, and breathtaking mountain views. The administrative center, L'Aquila, is a picturesque city nestled in the mountains and serves as a great starting point to explore Abruzzo. Other cities like Pescara, Chieti, Teramo, Sulmona, and Scanno also offer unique historical charm and should not be missed. With 65% of the territory consisting of mountains, 34% hilly terrain, and the remainder flat land, each province in Abruzzo has a distinct climate. L'Aquila is mostly characterized by mountains, Chieti by smooth hills, and Pescara and Teramo by a mix of green mountains descending towards the sea.
